Conservation Groups and Tribal Members Tell Congress to Protect the Grand Canyon's Future

WHAT:  Media Availability and Lunch

WHO:   Members of the Havasupai and Hualapai Tribes, the National Parks Conservation Association, the Grand Canyon Trust, the Sierra Club, and the Center for Biological Diversity

WHEN:  Thursday, April 8, 30 minutes following the close of the hearing (which starts at 10 a.m. MST)

WHERE:  Outside Hopi House, South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park (a five-minute drive from the hearing)

A joint Congressional hearing will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at the Shrine of the Ages in Grand Canyon National Park to discuss the park’s environmental future.

David Nimkin, Southwest regional director, National Parks Conservation Association, Bill Hedden, executive director, Grand Canyon Trust, Carletta Tilousi, member of the Havasupai Tribe, and others will testify before members of the House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands and the Subcommittee on Water and Power on the threats posed by uranium mining, management of the Colorado River through the Canyon, and other issues.

Following the hearing, they and representatives of the Hualapai Tribal Nation, the Center for Biological Diversity, and the Sierra Club will be available at the canyon’s rim to speak about current conditions in the canyon and how conditions could change if more mining claims become active and adaptive river releases are not better implemented.

We will meet outside Hopi House, behind El Tovar Hotel, on the rim of the Grand Canyon 30 minutes after the hearing ends. Boxed lunches will be provided -- please RSVP to Kathleen O’Neil by 4 p.m. MST April 7.
