'Frostpaw the Polar Bear' to Hold White House Vigil Over Climate Crisis, Keystone Pipeline

As Thanksgiving Approaches, Campaign Urges President Obama 'Pardon the Polar Bear'

WASHINGTON— In the days leading up to Thanksgiving, the Center for Biological Diversity’s Frostpaw the Polar Bear will hold a week-long vigil outside the White House to urge President Obama to “pardon the polar bear” by saving it from climate change and the Keystone XL pipeline. The event starts Thursday, Nov. 21 at 11 a.m. Visitors are invited to join Frostpaw and have their picture taken.

Pardon the Polar Bear

Frostpaw will also be greeting President Obama next week at stops in Los Angeles and San Francisco. The events are the culmination of a months-long campaign by Frostpaw to stop Keystone that included a trip to Martha’s Vineyard this summer.

“The president pardons turkeys each year at Thanksgiving, saving them from the oven. It’s time he pardoned the world’s polar bears from the ravages of climate change,” said Peter Galvin, the Center’s co-founder. “If polar bears — and the rest of us — are going to have a future on this planet, we need to address the climate crisis head-on. And the first step ought to be rejecting the Keystone pipeline.”

What: Frostpaw the Polar Bear in front of the White House urging President Obama to reject Keystone XL and take action on climate change. Visitors are invited to have their photo taken with Frostpaw and sign a petition to “pardon the polar bear.”

Background
Scientists say two-thirds of the world’s polar bears will disappear by 2050 if climate change is left unchecked. Dr. James Hansen, one of the world’s leading climate scientists, says the Keystone XL pipeline would be “game over” for avoiding the worst effects of the climate crisis.
