Pascua Yaqui Students to Announce Name for New Arizona Jaguar

TUCSON, Ariz.― On Thursday afternoon students at Hiaki High School on the Pascua Yaqui reservation near Tucson will announce the name they've chosen for the wild jaguar recently photographed in Arizona, the third jaguar detected in the state in the past year and a half. The name will be announced during a ceremony in the school's garden.

The young male jaguar was photographed in December 2016 and January 2017 in the Huachuca Mountains, 90 miles southeast of the reservation.

Students at the school, which provides Yaqui studies and Yaqui language courses, cast votes for their favorite names last week and received instruction in jaguar biology and natural history.

What: Naming ceremony for the region's new jaguar

When: 1:30 p.m., Thursday, April 27

Where: Hiaka High School, 4747 W. Calle Vicam, Pascua Yaqui Reservation

Media availability: Students, staff and jaguar experts will be available for interviews. B-roll of the announcement and student voting will be available Thursday afternoon.

The Tucson-based Center for Biological Diversity has been working for decades to save jaguars in the United States. In 2014 the Center secured more than 750,000 acres of federally protected critical habitat for U.S. jaguar recovery.
